The county covers an area of 757 square miles (2,000 km2) and is divided into three tiers of seven townships each.
Established on February 18, 1870, Swift County was named in honor of Henry Adoniram Swift, the third governor of Minnesota (1863–64). The county's early settlers consisted predominantly of Scandinavians and Germans, many of whom were Civil War veterans.
Historically, Swift County has faced its share of challenges, including an Indian rebellion in 1862, which prompted settlers to temporarily leave the area. However, by 1865, the settlers returned, and the county began to thrive.
In 1869, the St. Paul & Pacific Railroad reached Willmar, and by the following year, it arrived in Benson. The railroad played a significant role in determining the county's trading centers, such as Kerkhoven, DeGraff, Benson, and Randall, which were strategically located at intervals of approximately 8 miles (13 km).
